Action Alert #5: H.R. 3509 - Safe Gun Storage Act of 2021
On November 30, a fifteen year old shot and killed 4 students at his high school in Oxford, Michigan with a gun from his parents gifted to him just days before.
Devastatingly, his case is not unique. In school shootings, 80% of the shooters under eighteen got the gun(s) they used in their attack from their home or the home of a friend or relative. To make matters worse, 54% of gun owners don’t store their guns securely. How many shootings could have been prevented if children did not have easy access to weapons? We need gun owners to secure their guns.
Guns should not be available -- intentionally or unintentionally -- to children. To change gun storage laws and keep guns out of children’s hands, we need your help.
This week, we’re supporting the following legislation: H.R. 3509 - Safe Gun Storage Act of 2021. This bill requires safety standards for firearm locks and safes. Under such standards, firearm locks must be reasonably designed to (1) prevent the firearm from discharging while the lock is activated, and (2) prevent unauthorized access to the firearm.
With your help, we can get H.R. 3509 passed. Take action on this bill right now →
