Action Alert #4: H.R. 4194 - The People’s Response Act
For decades, our communities have been told that the only solution to questions of public safety is more policing and more prisons. This solution has turned the United States into the world’s prison capital, locking up 698 people for every 100,000 people in the population. Overwhelming police presence is another threat to community well-being. In the United States, police violence is a leading cause of death for Black men, with 1 in every 1,000 Black men being likely to be killed by law enforcement. Something needs to change. We need for our communities to be protected, not policed.
Gun violence continues to destroy the communities we love. We have to fight to change these laws and institutions for a better future. But we need your help.
As mentioned in our last email, we are embarking on a new project to share legislation and proactive ways you can take action every other Wednesday. We know that when we all take action together, we can and will make meaningful change in the fight to end gun violence.
This week, we’re supporting the following legislation: H.R. 4194 - The People’s Response Act. This act will establish, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a division on community safety to catalyze, coordinate, and disseminate research on approaches to community safety that reduce criminal justice contact while expanding opportunity. This includes a particular focus on groups that have been disproportionately harmed by the criminal justice system.
With your help, we can get H.R. 4194 passed. Take action on this bill right now →
