ABOUT DE-POLICING GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION
DEPOLICEGVP.COM
The De-Policing Gun Violence Prevention Policy Playbook was created with the following goals in mind: (1) ensure that the at-large gun violence prevention movement owns up to its past and present perpetuation of the police state and thus, harm against marginalized communities; (2) tackle the root causes of gun violence to ensure that there is not a community feeling of a "need for police" and (3) create a unified, de-policed policy platform collaboratively authored by local advocates for gun violence prevention organizers to utilize across the country.
Months in the making, the playbook was created through cross-organizational resource sharing, comprehensive literature review, conversations with community based organizations and longtime community organizers, virtual community roundtables, and more. Following its completion in January of 2021, Not My Generation gathered with other organizers to create brief trainings on abolitionist thought, racial injustice, local, state, and federal organizing, and how to build coalitions.
This playbook does not solve every policy issue related to gun violence nor does it meet all of the needs of targeted and marginalized communities. Yet, we do believe that the outlined policies have the power, ability, and potential to dramatically reshape the gun violence prevention movement’s approach to keeping our communities safe and to reject the false narrative that we need to rely on police and prisons in order to do so. We believe that building a more whole, just, and compassionate United States can and should take place without reliance on the police state and carceral state. The De-Policing Gun Violence Prevention Policy Playbook imagines a new approach to justice, safety, liberation, and gun violence prevention.
