Not My Generation is a nonprofit organization committed to localized, intersectional gun violence prevention advocacy by and for young adults. All of the organizing NMG engages in strives to recognize and account for the reality that gun violence is not simply a stand-alone policy issue, but rather a symptom of wider systemic injustices, particularly as they relate to race, class, and gender injustice. We organize under the shared belief that gun violence prevention must be a broad endeavor that not only focuses on changing gun policy, but also on fundamentally changing the systemic and historical factors, institutions, and societal beliefs that have caused the American gun violence epidemic to persist.
NMG also believes that community members know best what their communities need, which is why we focus primarily on training, empowering, funding, organizing, and connecting local organizers so that they can be effective, inclusive catalysts for change.
Equity & Inclusion
Not My Generation provides all of our organizers with a minimum stipend for their work, which generally falls within the range of $200 to $500 annually, depending on hours and available funding within the organization. NMG also recognizes in order to affect massive social change, we must invest in the individual people that are fighting for their communities. It is in this spirit that NMG also provides a need-based grant program to provide low-income and/or otherwise marginalized young people with financial support in order to help create the time, space, and energy to organize in the communities that have been most harmed by gun violence. If you feel that you could benefit from this program to directly fund community organizers, please our team.
Abolition
Not My Generation is an unapologetically abolitionist organization. Please check out our Mission webpage here to learn about our stance. Even as an abolitionist organization, we know that abolition is new for a lot of youth organizers. That’s why we are so passionate about meeting you where you are. Whether you’re a lifelong abolitionist or just learning about why police and prison abolition matters, we want you on our team.
Community
We’re in this for the long haul. And nobody wants to do this work alone. That’s what makes Not My Generation so special: we do this work together. From local coalitions to the Board of Directors, we believe that the only path forward towards safe, just communities is one grounded in togetherness, collaboration, & solidarity.
