Action Alert #1: H.R. 4118 - Break the Cycle of Violence Act

Every day, 316 people are shot in the United States. This means that every year, 115,551 people in the United States are shot, 40,000 of whom die as a direct result. The rest of these gunshot victims -- as well as the families, communities, and loved ones of those killed by guns -- face incredible trauma, loss, and grief, creating a secondary mental health epidemic as a result of the prevalence of gun violence in our country. The daunting, ever-present issue of gun violence worsened and became more lethal during the COVID-19 pandemic; with record increases in gun sales coupled with one of the deadliest years on record. Given these grim realities, it’s up to us to stop the gun violence epidemic. And it’s up to us to do it now.

Not My Generation (NMG), a nonprofit committed to localized, intersectional gun violence prevention advocacy for young adults, works tirelessly, day in and day out,to combat this injustice. For as long as our communities are suffering from the effects of gun violence, whether it be mass shootings, community violence, domestic violence, police violence, suicide, hate crimes, or anything else, we will continue showing up and fighting to build safer, more just communities. One way we can do this lifesaving work is by changing the legislation that has intentionally and carefully perpetuated systems of violence and oppression against the most vulnerable among us for far too long.

Though our laws and institutions are unjust, discriminatory, and often dangerous, we don’t have to live this way. We have the power to change our laws and institutions. We have the power to envision, fight for, and enact a different kind of future. But we need your help.

That’s why we’re so excited to embark on our newest organizing project: sending regular action alerts to activists like you highlighting a unique and specific way to take action against harmful legislation and in favor of innovative, lifesaving legislation.. We know that when we all take action together, we can and will make meaningful change in the fight to end gun violence.

H.R. 4118 would authorize the Secretary of Health and Human Services to build safer, thriving communities, and save lives, by investing in effective community-based violence reduction initiatives, and for other purposes)
